Since 1918

Over a century of stories to tell

Our Story

Once upon a time...

In 1918 Lisbon, Emílio da Silva Braga inaugurated a legacy that would endure across generations.

On Rua Nova do Almada, he founded Papelaria Emílio Braga, which quickly became a cherished landmark in the city. More than just a store, it was a haven for those who appreciated the art of writing and the elegance of craftsmanship, where each notebook was meticulously designed and crafted with care and precision.

The “galocha”, their most emblematic notebook, became a timeless symbol of sophistication due to its unique and elegant design, featuring a hard cover lined with "chagrin" paper, and reinforced fabric corners in vibrant colors.

Today, over a century later, and through nearly four generations, Emílio Braga Lda. still keeps the founder's legacy alive, producing each notebook with the same artisanal dedication that has defined the brand since the beginning.

The “galocha” remains far more than a mere writing accessory; it is a testament to the resilience, quality, and pride which embody the essence of the Portuguese spirit.

Curiosities

Did you know that...

Before producing the vibrant array of colors that now define their notebooks, Emílio Braga stationery shops originally made notebooks for accounting and commercial purposes? It’s true.

Emílio Braga became known for its quality, starting with the black and red notebooks, a standard that has extended to every product they've made since.

When Emílio Braga Stationery Shop was established, it was in our printing workshop that the Diários da República were bound.

In the 1950s and 60s, Emílio Braga was responsible for all stationery for Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am, the leading American airline of the 1940s.

It was in the cellars of Emílio Braga's workshop on Travessa das Pedras Negras that all campaign materials for Humberto Delgado’s 1958 run for president were printed.

The work was carried out between one and five in the morning, by candlelight and lighters, to avoid the scrutiny of the political police.
